Every year, millions of Christians around the world celebrate Easter, proclaiming with absolute certainty: 'He is risen!' But in an age of skepticism, it is completely natural to ask: Did the Resurrection really happen? Is this the defining moment of human history, or is it merely a comforting myth?

If Jesus of Nazareth did not rise from the dead, then the Christian faith is a hollow illusion. As the Apostle Paul himself wrote:

'And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.' — 1 Corinthians 15:14

Fortunately, we do not have to rely on blind faith. By examining the historical proof of the Resurrection, we can find compelling, intellectually grounded answers. This method relies only on historical data that is virtually undisputed by modern scholars—both Christian and non-Christian alike.

What is the 'Minimal Facts' Approach?

Instead of arguing for the inspiration of the Bible right out of the gate, the Minimal Facts approach looks at a core set of historical events surrounding the end of Jesus' life. These facts are so well-attested by ancient sources that over 90% of critical, secular, and religious scholars agree they occurred. The question then becomes: What is the best historical explanation for these facts?

Fact 1: Jesus Died by Roman Crucifixion

Before we can examine the evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus, we must establish that He actually died. Secular historians like Tacitus and Josephus confirm that Jesus was executed under Pontius Pilate. Roman soldiers were professional executioners; the physical trauma of scourging and crucifixion guaranteed death. The theory that Jesus merely 'fainted' on the cross (the Swoon Theory) is rejected by modern medical and historical scholarship.

Fact 2: The Disciples' Sincere Belief in His Appearances

Shortly after Jesus' death, His disciples genuinely believed they saw Him alive again. This is not a later legend; the belief is documented in early creeds (such as 1 Corinthians 15:3-7) dating to within years of the crucifixion. These men did not just claim to see Jesus; their entire lives were radically transformed. They went from being terrified, hiding cowards to bold proclaimers of the Gospel, facing persecution and martyrdom.

Fact 3: The Conversions of Key Skeptics

If the disciples were simply hallucinating out of grief, how do we explain the sudden conversions of hostile skeptics? James, the brother of Jesus, was an unbeliever during Jesus' earthly ministry. Yet, he became a leader of the Jerusalem church and was martyred for his faith after witnessing the risen Christ. Even more striking is Saul of Tarsus (Paul), a violent persecutor of the early Church, who became the greatest Christian missionary after an encounter with the resurrected Lord on the road to Damascus.

Fact 4: The Empty Tomb

The message of the Resurrection was first proclaimed in Jerusalem—the very city where Jesus was buried. If the tomb had not been empty, the Roman or Jewish authorities could have easily produced the body of Jesus and crushed the movement instantly. Instead, the earliest opponents of Christianity acknowledged the empty tomb by claiming the disciples stole the body (Matthew 28:13). This admission unwittingly provides strong historical proof that the tomb was indeed empty.

The Best Explanation: He Is Risen

When you combine these minimal facts, alternative theories (like mass hallucinations, a stolen body, or a spiritual metaphor) fall apart. They simply lack the explanatory power to account for the empty tomb, the transformed lives of the disciples, and the conversions of skeptics like Paul. The most logically consistent and historically sound conclusion is the biblical one: Did Jesus rise from the dead? Yes, He did.

This historical reality changes everything. It means Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be—the Son of God—and that death does not have the final word. Today, this same risen Jesus offers hope, forgiveness, and eternal life to anyone who seeks Him.
